Red Grooms is well-known for his witty, brightly colored figurative sculptures and “sculpto-pictoramas,” clever and imaginative environments that relate in some ways to movie sets and the artist’s own experiences in film production. Among the highlights of Grooms’ prolific career are numerous one-person shows, including recent multi-venue exhibitions and retrospectives organized by the Cheekwood-Tennessee Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art, Nashville; the New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut; and the Nagoya City Art Museum, Japan. His works are in the collections of New York City’s major museums, plus many other fine art institutions across the country. A one-person show of sculptures by Grooms, the first in his exhibition history, was held in the Museum Building during Grounds For Sculpture’s Spring 2000 Exhibition. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Grooms has resided in New York City since the late 1950s.
