'Forth'

Mary Shaffer

1994 - stone: Pennsylvania granite and metal: steel

Font Size: AAA

In 1994, Mary Shaffer was one of thirteen artists invited to participate in a three week sculpture workshop sponsored by Philip and Muriel Berman in Allentown, PA. During this time she produced 'Forth', on display in the park. A cylindrical metal core, crowned by a cruciform structure that recalls both a plug and a propeller, is surrounded by roughly hewn sections of Pennsylvania granite. Broad at the base and tapered toward the top, the stone slabs attempt to encase the machine-made steel elements, creating a dynamic tension between upwards propulsion and gravitational pull, compression and expansion, positive and negative masses.
