Join us for a rare opportunity: a day in Baltimore with artist and 2016 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Joyce J. Scott, accompanied by GFS Executive Director, Gary Garrido Schneider.

This exclusive day trip to Baltimore, specially curated for GFS members, will begin with a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Joyce J. Scott will personally lead us on a private tour of her 50-year retrospective exhibition Joyce J Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams. This major retrospective brings together nearly 140 of the beloved Baltimore icon’s sculptures, jewelry, quilts, garments, performances, and mixed-media installations. Many members will recall Scott’s exhibition at GFS in 2017-2018, Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths. GFS acquired Scott’s piece Everywoman’s Harriet into its permanent collection, and is honored to loan the work for Scott’s retrospective exhibition.

Following the private tour, Joyce will dine with us on the private terrace at Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen, where we will enjoy a lovely multi-course lunch of locally sourced, farm-fresh food that preserves Chesapeake culinary traditions. Located within the Baltimore Art Museum overlooking the sculpture garden, Gertrude’s has been lauded by Food & WineTravel & Leisure, the Washington PostEdible DCThe Baltimore Sun, and is a multi-year winner of Baltimore Magazine’s “Best of Baltimore.” Celebrated owner John Shields has written four popular cookbooks and hosted two highly acclaimed PBS cooking shows, Chesapeake Bay Cooking and Coastal Cooking with John Shields.

After lunch, we will visit the studio of longtime colleague and friend to Joyce, local sculptor Paul Daniel, known for his large-scaled kinetic public works. Daniel’s artist statement explains, “My commitment to wind activated sculpture and its connection to the environment has been a passion of mine my entire career… My sculptures engage the community making what often goes unnoticed around become noticed – the wind, its speed and direction, moments of calm, sun and reflection, the importance of water. These are not simple realities, yet they are everyday occurrences that in our time can be missed.”

This incredibly special members-only trip has very limited space. The trip is open to current and new GFS members. Register now online, or call (609) 586-0616. Members-only price $320, includes round-trip charter coach transportation from GFS, museum admission, exclusive private tours, and elegant 3-course lunch.
