Join us for a GFS Member Meet-up at Art@Bainbridge, to explore the exhibition Joyce J. Scott: Declarations and hear from Gary Garrido Schneider, GFS Executive Director, about Scott’s work.

Joyce J. Scott is a renowned artist, educator, cultural leader, 2016 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, and friend of GFS. She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from the Instituto Allende in Mexico. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2016 and a Smithsonian Visionary Artist in 2019.

Many GFS members will recall Scott’s exhibition at GFS in 2017-2018, Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths. GFS acquired Scott’s beaded figure fashioned with found objects, Everywoman’s Harriet, into its permanent collection in 2018. The piece is currently on view in GFS’s exhibition Opening the Vault: A Look Inside the GFS Collection through January 3, 2027.

Joyce J. Scott: Declarations, currently on view at Princeton University Art Museum’s Art@Bainbridge, is “an exhibition celebrating the artist’s materially rich, multilayered, genre-defying work and her commitment to free expression, presented on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“This exhibition spans the career of the renowned Baltimore artist Joyce J. Scott, whose multimedia practice is deeply rooted in her African American ancestry and in global craft traditions. Joyce J. Scott: Declarations showcases the artist’s intricate sculptural beadwork, which she often combines with handblown glass, quilting, and found objects. Approaching charged themes such as gun violence, misogyny, and racial injustice with both humor and horror, Scott choreographs narratives that are as disturbing and personal as they are beautiful and universal. This exhibition of Scott’s compelling and timely “declarations” connects past and present and casts a powerful lens on the presence of slavery at Bainbridge House during the time of the American Revolution.” (Art@Bainbridge)

This meet-up is open to current and new GFS members. Pre-registration is required as the exhibition gallery has limited space. Members are responsible for their own transportation to and from Art@Bainbridge.
