8 Sessions: Thursdays – May 18, 25; June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; July 6

This 8-week course is focused on the specific technique of slab building in clay. Learn how to roll “plates” or flat sheets of clay that are then reoriented to stand upright in order to build forms. Undertake projects using soft slabs and also leather hard slabs (which are left to stiffen up) to create both round and geometric forms. The outcome is completely up to each participant—whether that manifests as a functional vessel or a more sculptural form. Surface decoration techniques will be taught over the weeks of the course so you can add your own unique impression on the clay through both color and texture, abstract or representational. No prior knowledge or experience working with clay is needed; all levels are welcome.

Instructor: Josephine Mette Larsen is a Danish-American ceramic artist currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as she is undertaking a long-term residency at The Clay Studio. Larsen’s bicultural background is reflected in her education as she holds a BA in Design from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Denmark and an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Alongside pursuing a studio practice, Larsen currently teaches ceramics classes at The Clay Studio, Neighborhood Potters (Brewerytown, PA) and at Lisa Naples’ Clay Studio (Frenchtown, NJ).
