‘I am the Venus’ incorporates performance, animation and 3-D printing. Through a partnership between the Digital Stone Project in New York and Garfagnana Innovazione in Italy, Helena Lukasova had an opportunity to create this work during an intensive digital carving workshop in Gramolazzo, Italy.

Digital milling equipment, originally designed for use in the automotive and aerospace industries, was used to carve the stone in response to the artist’s movements. To produce a template for the machines to follow, the artist was captured digitally producing a series of movements, using her hands to outline the shape of her body. Through the creation of these motions, a digital sketch for the sculpture was created.

“I decided to use myself as a template for a series of female figures. The form of the body is created by moving my hands along my body, thus creating the virtual model of the body of the sculpture. The ‘sketch’ is based on the trajectory of my gestures, leaving marks in space and time. It captures a visual structure of human behavior. I see it as a great experience to arrive from the primal gesture of the movement in space to a solid sculptural form.”
