The Act of Drawing

Grounds For Sculpture presents a collection of works created throughout a twelve-week drawing program titled Creating Connections: Drawing. This shared experience was an opportunity for participants to develop new skills, revisit past inspirations and engage in reflective conversations, observing and interpreting the natural world. Shared in this exhibition are exercise-based drawings participants used to explore the nature of charcoal, graphite, and ink as a medium, experiment with various mark-making techniques, and gain confidence in the use of positive and negative spaces as compositional elements. More developed drawings highlight each artist's individual style and embrace of their chosen medium. Among these are beautifully drawn representations of sculpture, evocative landscapes, and whimsical characters both figurative and organic.

Led by artist Shawn Allen-Dela Rosa, Creating Connections: Drawing was composed of fifteen adults over 55 as part of Grounds For Sculpture’s new Creative Aging Initiative. The program was supported in part by the 2017-2018 Catalyzing Creative Aging Program, led by the National Guild for Community Arts Education in partnership with Lifetime Arts, funded by Aroha Philanthropies, Music Man Foundation, and the Moca Foundation.
