Grounds For Sculpture was established in 1992 to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for contemporary sculpture by organizing exhibitions, publishing scholarly catalogues, and offering a variety of educational programs to the public.

In 1986 an architectural competition was held for the design of a sculpture park to be located at the old New Jersey State Fair grounds. The site had been abandoned for years and was a rubble strewn field containing three dilapidated exhibition buildings and fifteen gnarled maple trees. Brian Carey of AC/BC Associates in New York City was selected to be the Project Architect.

The park was envisioned not only as a place to exhibit sculpture, but also as a serious garden and arboretum. The design included both formal and informal aspects. Paved terraces, pergolas, and courtyards were juxtaposed with natural woodlands, ponds, and groves of bamboo. Expanses of lawn were delineated by sculptured berms covered with roses.

Landscape construction began in 1989. Since then over 2,000 trees, representing more than 100 species and cultivars, have been planted. In addition to typical nursery stocks, many plants were collected from estates and abandoned nurseries, or were salvaged from construction sites. The rare and unusual trees you find at Grounds For Sculpture were selected by Brian Carey, and Bruce Daniels, Development Coordinator of the park.

Special thanks to the Master Gardeners of Mercer County for their help in creating this brochure, and for their dedication to the plants at Grounds For Sculpture.
