Peter Reginato was born in Dallas, TX, in 1945.  Growing up in California, a formative experience came as a teenager through his involvement in the “hot rod” car culture.  This lead to an interest in metal and color, and launched the development of his engineering abilities.  A scholarship allowed Reginato to study at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1963-66.  This was his last formal education in art.  According to the artist, all his engineering and sculpture techniques are self-taught except for a vocational school welding course.  After his first successful solo show in 1966 at the Open Theatre Gallery in Berkeley, where he showed mostly paintings, Reginato decided he wanted to be a sculptor.  He moved to New York City later that year, and has resided there ever since.  He taught at Hunter College, NYC from 1971-73 and has shown his work regularly over the years.  Solo exhibitions were recently mounted at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY; Meredith Long Gallery, Houston, TX; and Elaine Baker Gallery, Boca Raton, FL.  His work is represented in many public collections including the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and Richard Brown Baker Collection, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT.  Area 51 is on view at Grounds For Sculpture courtesy of the Hudson River Museum.
