Like Minds: A Conversation with Artists Joyce J. Scott, Sonya Clark, and Jeffrey Gibson

GFS is pleased to present a lively conversation between three dynamic contemporary artists who share an affinity for the found object, a strong interest in addressing issues of culture, history, and identity, and whose practices frequently push the boundaries of their mediums; Joyce J. Scott, whose exhibition Harriet Tubman and Other Truths is currently on view at Grounds For Sculpture; Sonya Clark, whose work has been exhibited in over 350 museums and galleries throughout the world; and Jeffrey Gibson, who will be the subject of a traveling exhibition opening this spring at the Denver Art Museum.

Moderated by Lowery Stokes Sims and Patterson Sims, guest co-curators of Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths, this 90-minute discussion will offer audience members probing insights into the influences and issues that drive contemporary artistic practice and each of these internationally acclaimed artists’ work.

All tickets include GFS admission and opportunity to view Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths prior to program start. When registering, you may choose to upgrade your ticket to include a signed exhibition catalog, exclusively available to program attendees.

Exploring subjects of representation, politics, and topical events involving African Americans and oppressed people worldwide, the Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths Exhibition Catalog showcases the beauty of Scott’s art, mastery of her materials, and provocative world views. It is the most comprehensive publication available to date on Scott’s work, and features more than 60 works from the last 45 years, including 12 new pieces based upon Harriet Tubman. Essays by co-curators Lowery Stokes Sims and Patterson Sims, an interview with the artist, and commentary by Seph Rodney provide rich narrative and context.
