Common Threads: Introduction to West African Dance

Join us as we share in a brief history on West African dance and culture followed by a dance instruction, accompanied by live drumming, focused on basic technique, release and movement. This is a 90-minute beginner’s class, open to all ages. Children require adult supervision. Program will take place in GFS’ West Gallery. Instructor: Makeda Kemit.

Common Threads is a series of community driven programs designed to provide varied and engaging points of entry into the work of artist Joyce J. Scott. Programs take place in the Joyce J. Scott: Harriet Tubman and Other Truths exhibition space unless otherwise noted, and are made possible, in part, by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in these programs do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Additional funding provided by the Shirley and Arthur Martin Family Fund.
