Premier Outdoor Exhibition: Aerial Roots - Works of Steve Tobin

Grounds For Sculpture celebrates the opening of its new seven-acre wildflower meadow with its first-ever outdoor sculpture exhibition featuring the majestic creations of internationally acclaimed artist Steve Tobin.
He presents us with a dramatic interplay of art and nature that transforms our new meadows and groves into a magical landscape. They invite you to touch them, stroll through them, gaze upon them and fall under their spell as they heighten your perception of earth, sky and humanity. Aerial Roots will span four seasons so visitors may return to marvel in how they seem to change with light, weather, and foliage.

Outlet Dance Project

Rain or shine!
Join Outlet Dance Project for a performance experience like no other as the dancers move in and around the park’s magical sculptural landscape. See our sculpture come to life. Outlet Dance features talented emerging female choreographers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York and  a variety of traditional and new dance forms presented in nontraditional venues. Wellness Walk
Enjoy the park and get fit at the same time! Grounds For Sculpture is pleased to present Wellness Walks/Wellness Talks, sponsored by Springpoint Foundation and Stoneking Wellness Center. This fitness program is for the mature adult who wants to get fit, enjoy the natural beauty of Grounds For Sculpture, and learn more on how to live active, healthful lives. Each session will center on a different topic related to general health and exercise and include healthy refreshments while you learn. Fall Photography
Workshop Dates: Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm
Capture the magic of the season! In this popular four-session workshop you’ll seek out the blazing beauty of autumn at Grounds For Sculpture while learning how to look at your photos with new perspective. This workshop will teach camera handling, professional techniques, how to train your photographic eye, composition essentials and the language of light. An SLR or digital camera is required. Pumpkin Carving Demonstration
Time: 2-4pm.
Back by popular demand! Do you love carving pumpkins and want to learn more intricate carving methods? Come watch Ashley Campbell, pumpkin carver extraordinaire, work her magic. She employs the “surface sculpted” technique of carving away the outside layer to reveal the fleshy interior to design a “ghoulish” face. Want to make your own? Ashley is teaching a pumpkin carving workshop on Oct 22!

Time: 11am & 1pm
Lesson and theme change monthly. Ages 3-5 only. Children must be accompanied by an adult companion. Listen to a story, become park explorers, and make original works of art. Bring your toddler to learn about sculpture through hands-on activities. Instruction designed to meet learning needs of 3-5 year olds. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Meets in the Visitor’s Center. Instructor: Joslyn Johnson.

Moonlight Tour and Dinner at Rat's Restaurant
Time: 7pm dinner, 9pm tour
Let the magnificence of Grounds For Sculpture wow you by moonlight in an experience like no other! Tours are timed closely with the full moon. Participants will begin with a delicious three-course dinner at Rat’s Restaurant. Docent-led tours begin at 9pm and will feature sculptures lit to show their brilliance. Public Sculpture: Creating Community Cultural Vitality

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) and GFS bring you an interactive panel discussion exploring the dynamic processes and collaborative relationships that form when sculpture is made part of a community. This is the first in a four-part series being carried out by ISC and partner organizations around the country to engage its constituents and the wider public in dialogue about important issues in the sculpture world. In the GFS event, panelists, highly knowledgeable and experienced in various aspects of successful public art projects, will share their perspectives on how the best work gets done and what it can mean to the vitality of communities. A special pre-opening tour of GFS Fall/Winter exhibitions is included! Toad Hall Wine Tasting: The Hallmark Wine Series

Join Alan Hallmark, Rat’s Restaurant’s resident wine expert on the third Friday of every month as he makes fine wine both approachable and fun during a tasting series sure to please the novice and aficionado alike. Alan’s friendly and relaxed approach to wine makes these highly spirited tastings both delightful and informative. All tastings take place at Toad Hall Shop & Gallery, located across the courtyard from Rat’s Restaurant. $10 per person, which will be applied toward your meal should you choose to dine at Rat’s following the tasting. Education Gallery Exhibition: Glass Books
Exhibition Dates: October 15 – December 11, 2011
In the GlassBook Project, survivors of deep personal trauma meet with students to share their experience and coping mechanisms. Students then make books out of glass on a particular topic to reflect the survivor's point of view. This powerful exhibition, which fosters vocalizing and offers profound insight, has toured nationally and now comes to GFS.

Fall/Winter Exhibition Season 2011

The park is closed to the public all day on Saturday, October 15. Members and invited guests only.
In the Museum we present a powerful group show of work in cast and fabricated iron revealing the artists’ astounding technical abilities and great diversity of their approaches. View work by Dave Carrow, Kate Graves, Rory Mahon, Gina Miccinelli, Joe Montroy, Matt Reiley, Ken Payne, Scot Thompson, and Jay Wholley.
On the Domestic Arts Building’s main floor are works by some of the most talented student artists in the United States and beyond in an annual juried exhibition sponsored by The International Sculpture Center (ISC). Each year the ISC holds this prestigious worldwide competition to support, encourage, and recognize the exemplary work of emerging sculptors.
The Mezzanine of the Domestic Arts Building will showcase the meticulously crafted metal sculptures of Michael Dunbar. This show captures the power and elegance of Dunbar’s monumental work, but on the personal and intimate scale of models and miniatures, with their complex intimation of astronomical and navigational instruments, chronographs, and other precision mechanisms used to measure time, space, and distance.

Guild for Early Music
Time: 12 – 5pm. Rain or shine!
You are invited to the 7th Annual Festival of the Guild for Early Music featuring music Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Early American music sung and played by numerous regional ensembles and concluding with a “petting zoo” of historical instruments for you to touch and play. This year’s theme, “Light and Dark,” will feature performances on harpsichord, viola da gamba, recorder, harp, flute, Baroque strings, sackbut, cornetto, percussion, and more, including themed “Light and Dark” sculpture tours of the park. Visit Toad Hall Shop and Gallery and The Museum Shop and receive 20% off all regularly priced merchandise. This festival is being presented in partnership with WWFM – The Classical Network.

An Evening with Melanie
Time: 8pm. Rain or shine!
When Melanie stepped onstage at Woodstock in 1969 and performed “Beautiful People,” she inspired the first panorama of candles and lighters ever raised at a concert. The young singer then wrote “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” selling a million copies and prompting Billboard, Cashbox, Melody Maker, and Record World to name her female vocalist of the year. With guitar in hand and a talent that combined amazing vocals, disarming humor, and a vibrant engagement with life, Melanie’s songs have been covered by stars as diverse as Cher, Dolly Parton, and Macy Gray.

Michael Dunbar’s abstract metal sculptures, featuring mechanical shapes and forms, evoke a sense of balance and precision.  Learn about the inspiration behind this artwork from Dunbar, who has been a professional sculptor for over three decades.

Artist-in-the-Park: Building Vessels with Plaster Bandage
Workshop Dates: Saturdays, Oct. 22, 29, November 5 and 12
Time: 10:30 – 1:30pm
Students age 9 and up with an adult companion.
Discover how to make large vessels using plaster bandages from Artist-in-the-Park, Clifford Ward. You’ll find many possibilities using this unique medium. Emphasis will be placed on the creative process, construction and finishing. Each duo of student and adult companion will create its own distinctive vessel with guidance from the instructor. You’ll be surprised by this remarkably versatile material!

Masquerade Ball at Rat's Restaurant
Ghosts, goblins, witches, bats and rats… lots and lots of rats! With candlelit rooms and the entire staff in costume, Rat’s Restaurant magically morphs for a delightfully eerie evening complete with a dinner buffet and a haunted night club.  Monster mash till the witching hour with DJ Flip spinning only the most ghostly tunes. Picture this Story!
Time: 12-2pm
Every picture tells a story…Come make yours! Using canvas boards, participants will make a collage painting to create a story. After creating their piece, students will be invited to share their stories with each other. Perfect for kids of all ages. Instructor: D.J. Haslett. Materials fee:

Handmade Japanese Paper and Book Arts Workshop
Workshop Dates: Saturdays, Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 12, and 19
Time: 1-4pm
Make stunning handmade art papers using time-honored traditional Japanese methods. In this four-session workshop, you’ll create several one-of-a-kind papers, some of which you will use to create a miniature book which beautifully displays the delicate, translucent papers. Instructor Kathleen Lang Metaxas is an area artist who specializes in handmade papers, printmaking and book arts.
