Wellness Walks / Wellness Talks

Dates: Sept. 2, 16 and 30.
Time: Walk begins at 9:30am followed by talk and refreshments at 10:15am.

Grounds For Sculpture is pleased to host a new program, sponsored by Springpoint Senior Living and Stoneking Wellness Center – Wellness Walks/Wellness Talks.  We want you to enjoy the park and get fit at the same time!  This fitness program is for the mature adult who wants to get into shape, enjoy the natural beauty of Grounds For Sculpture, and learn how to live an active, healthful lifestyle.  Each session includes healthy refreshments while you learn.  To view a full list of dates and topics of discussion for each, please click here.

The Garment as Sculpture: A Fiber Arts Adventure

Workshop Dates: Sat., Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25, October 2.  Time: 12 pm – 3 pm.
In this course, participants will create a small, non-wearable sculptural model of a fantasy garment using a variety of materials.  Incorporate inspiring imagery and emotive expression into the content, concept, and form of the sculpture.  Students will consider the history and function of fashion, and even derive inspiration from the sculptures in the Park! Students will learn a variety of skills in working with fiber arts and non-traditional materials during weekly demonstrations, and will be assisted in moving their ideas and sketches to a finished sculptural piece. Instructor: Kathryn Sclavi.

Sculptural Ceramics: The Beauty of Repetition

Workshop Dates: Sat., Sept. 11, 18, 25, Oct. 2, 16, 23, 30 & Nov 6.
Time: 10:30 am – 1:30 pm.
This ceramics class features pressmolding, low-relief tile making, bisque stamp making and handbuilding.  Perfect for intermediate students who want to explore molds as a way to make repeated objects, as well as incorporate found objects in their work (through the casting process).  For the beginner, making a one piece tile mold, slump mold or hump mold is easy, allowing you to make many beautiful tiles, bowls, platters and sculpture. Instructor: Debbie Reichard.

Curator's Walk

Time: 1pm.
Take part in an intimate tour as Grounds For Sculpture’s Curator discusses some new and familiar additions to the Grounds, the artists who created them, and the history behind each chosen work.

New Jersey Storytelling Festival

Time: 12 – 6pm. Rain or Shine! Free with park admission.
Come and celebrate the time- honored art of the oral tradition as over 40 tellers present different stories throughout the day. Picnic lunches will be available at The Peacock Café.

Wednesday, September 15th
Atelier Tour

Time: 5:30pm.
Grounds For Sculpture hosts a tour of the Johnson Atelier and Digital Atelier, led by Charles Haude, Executive Director of the Johnson Atelier, and John Lash, CEO of the Digital Atelier. Participants will get the inside “scoop” on how sculpture is made and the processes used to create a finished work of art. Tour participants can enjoy refreshments prior to beginning the tour. To make the night even more special, guests who dine at Rat’s following their tour will have their choice of a complimentary appetizer. "An Artist's View" Photography

Workshop Dates: Thurs., Sept. 16, 23, 30 and Oct. 7. Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm.
Explore the use of photography as a means of self expression.  Capture the beauty of fall and look at your photos in a new way.  Learn camera handling, professional techniques, how to see photographically, composition essentials, and the language of light while exploring your surroundings.  An SLR or digital camera is required.  Instructor: Sally Davidson.

Saturday, September 18th
Tots on Tour!

Time: 11am and 1pm. Ages 3-5. Rain or Shine! Free with park admission.
Listen to a story, become park explorers, and make original works of art. Bring your toddler to learn about sculpture through interactive activities. One adult must accompany each child. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Meets in Visitor Center. Instructor: Joslyn Johnson.

"Painting Music": A Workshop on Abstract Expressionist Art

Time: 1pm.
Learn, appreciate and participate in making Abstract Expressionist paintings.  Learn about the Abstract Expressionist movement and Wassily Kandinsky’s philosophy of “painting music.”  Set yourself free, while listening to classical music, and create your own expressionistic painting by dripping, brushing, and smearing liquid paints, in addition to using paint directly from the tube.  Ages 10 and up.  Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Instructor: D.J. Haslett.
Price: $5 materials fee per person or $20 per family of 5-6 members.

Full Moon Tour & Dinner at Rat's Restaurant

Time: 7pm.
Let the magnificence of Grounds For Sculpture wow you by moonlight in an experience like no other.  Begin your evening with a romantic 3-course dinner for two at Rat’s Restaurant, followed by a docent-led group tour lit by the full moon.  Enjoy a special walk through the Grounds and view sculptures individually lit to show off their evening brilliance.  Reservations are required and limited for our full moon tours.  All terrain walking shoes are recommended.

Matheny Exhibition

Exhibition: September 25 through November 14.
A private reception will be held from 2 – 4pm on September 25for invited guests only.
Grounds For Sculpture would like to welcome Matheny Medical and Educational Center to the Education Gallery, a special hospital and educational facility for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, located in Peapack, NJ.  This new exhibition will feature artwork in various media and further exhibits GFS’s commitment to members of the local and regional community, as well as different artistic backgrounds and perspectives.

10th Annual Epicurean Palette

Time: 1 – 4pm. Rain or Shine!
Join us for the 10th annual food event of the region – the Epicurean Palette, benefitting Grounds For Sculpture.  It’s a perfect way to spend and afternoon – strolling leisurely in the park, stopping along the way at the various tents set up along the path to sample the gourmet offerings.  Featuring tastings from the tri-state areas finest restaurants and wine/spirit vendors,, this annual fundraiser is designed to build an appreciation of food as an art.  And if great food and wine aren’t enough, the GFS shops will be recreated into a special destination along the path, offering 25% off selected items during the Epicurean Palette.  Tickets go on sale July 15.
