A collaborative work, Seat of Sound joins the artistic talents of composer Daniel Goode and Sculptor Robert Cooke. This multi-sensory sculpture was specially designed to be both visually pleasing and playable as a percussion instrument. Iron, brass, aluminum, and wood components are arranged into a system of gongs inspired by the gemalen, the traditional music of Bali and Java in Indonesia. In their unique approach to sculptural form and function, these artists have worked together on other similar projects, including one that received a New Jersey State Arts Council award.
Daniel Goode, from New York City, is an accomplished and innovative clarinetist. Solo, ensemble, and intermedia works have been performed throughout the United States, and in Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan, and he has made numerous recordings. His scores and essays have been published in music anthologies and magazines. Since 1976, Goode has also been a performer and composer with Gamelon, Son of Lion. A few years ago, he toured Java with that ensemble, and in 1999 the group performed with the Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects to music composed by Goode.
Works by Daniel Goode currently on view in the sculpture park:
