Film for Thought: HALF THE PICTURE

This popular winter program features specially curated selections inspired by themes explored in our current season of exhibitions. The three-installment series of documentary films offers a thought-provoking look at life’s spiritual and natural interconnectedness, challenges to the accepted roles of women in male-dominated fields, and the infinite and unexpected creative possibilities in simple objects. We encourage attendees to arrive early to explore the exhibitions during a period of quiet viewing.  Following the film, share your thoughts during an informal discussion led by experienced guest moderators.

In this selection inspired by Dina Wind – an artist who challenged the accepted roles of women working in a male-dominated field of materials – GFS screens and discusses Half the Picture, a film that celebrates the groundbreaking work of female film directors in Hollywood. Interviews with familiar, high-profile women directors and well-known gender inequality experts help to establish the magnitude of an employment discrimination issue as women are shut out, across the board, of an industry that systemically denies their expression and point of view.
