'Mesteño', a life-size, rearing mustang with mesmerizing, fiery red eyes is symbolic of the western frontier and the integral part this wild horse played in this country’s history. Descended from those left in America by Spanish explorers, breeds were later developed by Native Americans and cowboys. This is one of several maquettes for the monumental work currently sited at the Denver International Airport. Jimenez was working on the Denver commission when there was an accident in his studio, causing him to be crushed by the large sculpture which ultimately killed him.
