Richard Mupumha was born in 1963 in the Makoni District of Rusape, under the paramount chief Chiduku. He brings to his work a deep understanding of the traditional Shona values and customs. His preferred medium is white serpentine. At the age of 12, Richard excelled at wood carving and spent his spare time molding clay animals. With encouragement from fellow artists, Mupumha begain carving more seriously while also working in a clothing factory. By 1993 he was a successful artist and was able to devote himself to carving full-time.
His work has been exhibited all over the world and in the United States. He lives in Zimbabwe with his wife and two children.
